Tomestone Gear Upgrade Items are endgame tokens that are used to augment gear purchased with Allagan Tomestones at vendors in the Endgame Hubs. This improves the gear's item level by 10, achieving the same item level as armor dropped from the current savage raids, and makes it dyeable. Initially, these items can only drop from the savage versions of the 8-player Raids, specifically the second (accessory) and third (armor and weapon) encounters.

In the next major (odd-numbered) patch, an Alliance Raid is released that drops a Raid Token which can be used to exchange for these upgrade items. This allows casual players access to the augmented gear but at a later time than players who cleared the savage raids. The upgrade items also become available at their expansion's Hunt vendors. Only the armor and accessory upgrade items initially become accessible from alliance raids and the Hunt. The weapon upgrade item remains exclusive from savage raids until late in the patch cycle (x.18, x.38, or x.58).

When a new expansion comes out existing upgrade items get phased out, and the augmented tomestone gear is transitioned to being directly purchasable with Allagan Tomestone of Poetics Allagan Tomestones of Poetics. This system was implemented in patch 5.3.
