An apparition conjured by Emet-Selch when the city of Amaurot was recreated in the Tempest. In another age, Hythlodaeus knew the Ascian as a friend, and though this specter was but a pale imitation, his sense of self was such that he understood the whole of Amaurot—himself included—was born of another's consciousness. As such, it was not clear if he acted of his own volition, or if he was motivated by the unspoken desires of Emet-Selch himself. In any case, when the shade crossed paths with the Warrior of Darkness in the depths, he understood the part he was meant to play.

Hythlodaeus means dispenser of nonsense in Greek, and is the last name of a character from Sir Thomas More's Utopia.[1]
