Dialogue

Introduction Cutscene

Upon confirming that you would like to create your character, a crystal sound effect plays and your character is sucked into some crystal nyoom effect thingy. Idk someone else pls describe this part better.

[Loading screen for Gridania]

Your character is teleported to a dark place, not unlike the first background of the Character Creation process.

Floating, they spiral downwards with crystal sparkles emanating off them. Their feet touch the dark bottom of the room and make a rippling water effect.

???: Hear...

You lift your hand from you head as if waking up. You see a small, sun-like orb of light floating in front of you.

???: Hear… Feel…

The light-orb moves to the center of your vision and is suddenly eclipsed by a dark orb, from which a red-masked, dark-robed figure emerges.

The light-orb moves out from behind the dark figure.

???: Hear… Feel… Think...

A light envelopes you and changes your clothing and gear to those of the job linked to your chosen starting class.

The dark-robed man is silent.

Your weapon turns into a weapon of light and you seize hold of it and assume a battle stance.

The dark-robed man opens his mouth, materializes an eerie red glyph on his face, and also assumes a battle stance.

You aim/load your weapon of light.

The camera zooms in on the dark-robed figure as he readies his attack.

The camera zooms in on your character as you ready your attack. A clashing sound effect is heard before the dream ends.

???: ...Oi! You come to and open your eyes, as if waking from a dream. ???: Y'all right, son/lass? Grizzled Passenger: You were moanin' in your sleep an' sweatin' buckets besides. Grizzled Passenger: That'll be the aether, I reckon. Some are more prone to the sickness than others. Grizzled Passenger: No need to fret, though. You'll soon get used to it.

<He reaches for the wine, sniffs it, and chugs it.> <You suddenly hear the sound of a tooting horn, and turn to see a pair of Moogles peering at you. The lead Moogle was the one tooting the horn.> Furry Creature: Feeling better, kupo? Furry Creature: Aha! You can see us! I had a feeling you could, kupo! Moogle: We're moogles, and we live in this wood. <The other Moogle flies further into the cart and starts dancing in front of the grizzled passenger. The grizzled passenger does not react.> Moogle: Normal folks can't see or hear us─which makes you special, kupo! <The camera pans to the pair of young Elezen twins, who show no reaction to the moogles.> Moogle: And seeing as how you're special, maybe you can tell us something. Moogle: The wood's been restless of late─lots of strange things happening. Have you chanced to witness anything suspicious, kupo? <You shake your head as you gaze at the other Moogle in astonishment. The other moogle picks up the grizzled passenger’s glass bottle and chugs the wine.> <The camera pans back to the first moogle.> Moogle: But of course you haven't─you've only just arrived. Moogle: Well, there's nothing for it, then─we'll just have to keep looking. Nice to meet you, kupo! <The moogles fly off to join another pair of moogles. They seem to be discussing the recent events amongst each other.> <The grizzled passenger reaches for his wine bottle, gives the bottle an appreciative sniff, and raises it to his lips only to find the bottle completely empty. Surprised, he attempts to peer into the bottle, then looks around himself, looks at the wine label with a perplexed expression, and sets the wine bottle down. He turns back to you.> Grizzled Passenger: Gridania's still a fair way off, in case you were wonderin'. Seein' as you're awake, how's about you keep me company till we get there? <The camera pans back to the reserved pair of Elezen twins.> Grizzled Passenger: Them young'uns don't much care for conversation, see. <The camera pans back to the grizzled passenger, who motions to himself.> Bremondt: Bremondt's the name, an' peddlin's me trade. Bremondt: As for your good self, judgin' by your unusual garments, I'd say you were one of them new adventurers. Am I warm? <You nod.> Bremondt: I knew it! Goin' wherever the wind blows, seekin' fortune an' glory─now that's what I call livin'! Bremondt: So long as you can avoid dyin', I mean. Ain't no secret that adventurin's a risky business─these days especially. Bremondt: What was it that first attracted you to it? Why did you become an adventurer? > To gain power. > To win glory. > To amass a fortune. > … If you choose fortune: <The camera shows an aerial view of the chocobo carriage throughout Bremondt’s dialogue.> Bremondt: Fortune, eh? Well, it's a dream we've all had at one time or another. Bremondt: Once you've learned to handle yourself in a fight, you'll want to pay a visit to whichever craftin' or gatherin' guild tickles your fancy. Bremondt: Gridania's renowned for its leatherworkers an' carpenters, not to mention its botanists. Bremondt: Adventurin' ain't just about killin' things, after all. A peaceful pastime may well help you make your fortune! <The camera pans back to Bremondt.>

If you choose “...” ‘’You incline your head slightly as if in confusion.’’ Bremondt: Well, if you ain't inclined to tell, I ain't about to pry. Might be as ol' Bremondt's a chatterbox, but he sure as hells ain't no busybody. Bremondt: We all have a secret or three, don't we? Me? ‘’Dozens’’. Bremondt: An' I'd rather they stayed secret, too─which is why I don't go stickin' me nose where it ain't welcome.

Bremondt: Just remember, though: there're more important things than fortune an' glory. Such as breathin'. Ain't no profit in bein' dead, an' that's a fact. <The camera shifts to show an older Elezen Wood Wailer man intercepting the carriage.> Wood Wailer: Halt! Go no further! Bremondt: What's this, then? <An arrow flies past Bremondt and into the middle of the wooden carriage floor as you raise a hand to warn him.> Bremondt: Uwaaah! <Bremondt is startled and flails his limbs. The scene shifts to the carriage driver and the Wood Wailer.> Carriage Driver: Wh-What's going on!? Wood Wailer: A skirmish has broken out up ahead with the Ixal! For your own safety, you must remain here until─ <Two female Elezen archers enter the scene with bowstrings drawn and arrows nocked. Two Ixal advance at them, ready to do battle. The Wood Wailer grimaces and pulls out his spear in a battle stance.> Wood Wailer: Bloody hells! We shall hold them here! Try to break clear! <The two archers let loose their arrows. One Ixal blocks the arrow with their shield. The carriage begins moving again, and as you peer out at the skirmish, you see an Ixal being slayed by the lancer and another Ixal falling before an archer.> Bremondt: That was too bleedin' close… <Bremondt grabs the arrow embedded in the carriage floor and yanks it out.> Bremondt: Nice of the Ixal to send us a welcomin' party, though, eh? Bremondt: Jokin' aside, this won't be the last time you meet those feathered fiends, so just you take care, all right? Bremondt: By the by, is this your first trip to Gridania? Is this your first trip to Gridania? > Yes. > No. If you choose yes: Bremondt: It is!? Well then, let this journeyed itinerant tell you the ins an' outs of your destination. Bremondt: The city of Gridania lies slap-bang in the middle of the Black Shroud─the biggest, lushest forest in all Eorzea. Bremondt: Though it ain't near as lush as it used to be, sayin' that. Not since the Calamity laid half of it to waste. Bremondt: The destruction prompted a herd of new nasties to move in, an' gave the Ixal unneeded encouragement. Birdman raids've become a daily occurrence. <Bremondt looks over his shoulder.> Bremondt: Ah, at long last. Bremondt: Behold Gridania, the forest nation blessed by the elementals!

The Black Shroud-the ancient forest close to the heart of Eorzea. Beneath the boughs of its towering trees lies the woodland city-state of Gridania. Once a sanctuary from the world beyond the Hedge, even the mighty elementals, eternal guardians of the forest, could not forestall the coming of the Seventh Umbral Era. However, the goddess Nophica was never one to forsake Her children, and today, She welcomes another brave soul...

<The chocobo carriage comes to a stop. You and Bremondt get off the carriage.> One who may yet play a telling role in the tale of this great realm.

Bremondt: An' here's where we part ways, son/lass. Bremondt: I'm off to the markets to deliver me wares, then it's back to the highroad for me. <Bremondt reaches into his pockets and hands you a small item as the Elezen twins from before walk by behind him.> Bremondt: Here, I want you to have this─by way of thanks for keepin' me company. <You extend a hand to accept the item and place it in your pockets.> <The chocobo carriage rolls off.> Bremondt: Hey─you never did tell me your name, did you? Well, here's an idea... Bremondt: Become the sort of storied personage I can brag about havin' met, an' I'll consider us square. <Bremondt walks off as you turn to the city.>

May the Matron take him to Her bosom, that he may never want. And sow in his heart sow serenity, purity, and sanctity.

FINAL FANTASY X|V

Upon arriving in Gridania

???: You there! Yes, you!

An male Elezen lancer garbed in Wood Wailer armor points at you.

Wood Wailer: Your face is not known to me. Newly come to the city, no doubt.

The camera zooms in on your astonished face.

Bertennant: I am Bertennant, a Wood Wailer of Gridania.

Bertennant: It is my duty to protect our nation from her enemies while welcoming those who may yet prove her friends. Let us see which you are.

If you try to walk/run past or away from Bertennant:

Bertennant: Didn't you hear me? Come here and I shall guide you.

Accepting the Quest

Bertennant: Another green adventurer, I presume?

Bertennant: I thought as much. We cannot allow strangers to wander Gridania unchecked and untested.

Bertennant: Before you rush off and begin pestering every second citizen for work, I suggest you make yourself known at the Carline Canopy. That's the headquarters of the local Adventurers' Guild, in case you were wondering.

Bertennant: The Carline Canopy is the building you see behind me. Speak to Mother Miounne within, and she will take you in hand.

System: You have begun a quest!

System: Use the 'duty list' to help you complete your task.

If you speak to Bertennant again:

Bertennant: Make yourself known at the Carline Canopy, where the local Adventurers' Guild is headquartered. Speak to Mother Miounne within, and she will take you in hand.

Bertennant: So long as you are within Gridanian territory, you must abide by Gridanian laws. Go now, and do as I have instructed.

If you talk to Ulta:

Ulta: That's as far as you go, son/miss. Head on over to Bertennant, and mind you do as he says.

If you try to walk/run past Ulta at the entrance to the Central Shroud:

Ulta: Where do you think you're going? The Adventurers' Guild is the other way!

Honoraint: Ah! Give a man a bloody fright, sneakin' up on me like that...

Honoraint: Hm? Newly come to Gridania, are ye? Then I suggest ye continue on yer merry way to the Carline Canopy just behind me. Mother Miounne will want a word with ye.

When you talk to Capucine standing guard between the Carline Canopy and the Gridania Aetheryte Plaza:

Capucine: I don't believe I've seen your face before. New to Gridania, I take it?

Capucine: Then you're required to register at the Carline Canopy. Don't let me catch you strolling about until you've done so.

When you try to walk/run past Capucine:

Capucine: Halt! Unregistered outsiders are not permitted beyond this point. If you wish to remain in our city, you must obey our rules and proceed to the Carline Canopy at once.

In the Carline Canopy:

Leuric: Bland cuisine apart, I have begun to grow fond of this city and its people.

Leuric: The women, especially. I would not have believed the Black Shroud concealed such grace and beauty!

Tatasosa: <crunch> Hm...? <crunch> Shouldn't you be speaking with...<crunch>...Mother Miounne? <crunch> <crunch> <crunch>

Spinning Blade: They say the Seventh Umbral Era is corrupting the wildlife in the woods─making the beasts stronger, more aggressive. I look forward to meeting them.

Celestine: Gridania can be such a bore sometimes. All the people talk about is trees and elementals...

Celestine: Perhaps I should try my fortune in a city with a touch more excitement. They say the streets of Ul'dah are paved with gold, and the pirates of Limsa Lominsa will slit your throat as soon as look at you!

Nojiro Marujiro: I thought a remote town like this would be the perfect place to turn a profit. But it seems that no matter where you go, success is invariably achieved through the usual combination of labor and luck. Hmph.

Eral: New in town, eh? You and me, we must be fond of the road indeed to brave the journey to this godsforsaken city.

The Smith: As one of the Smiths, I provide guidance for those just starting out on the path of the adventurer. For the present, I suggest you learn your way around the city─an endeavor with which Mother Miounne shall no doubt wish to aid you.

Erkenbaud: Ah, a new adventurer. I do so love meeting fledgling heroes─so young, so daring, so ambitious!

Tell me, have you made a will?

Gontrant: Another adventurer in search of work, are we? Ah, if you have but recently arrived in town, I must insist that you first register your presence with Miounne.

Antoinaut: The number of visitors in Gridania is on the rise with every passing day. A pity their arrival seems to bring an equal share of trouble...

At the Airship landing reception desk:

Speaking to Lionnallais:

> When you pick the "Purchase Passage to [Gridania, Limsa Lominsa, or Ul'dah]" options:

Lionnellais: I'm terribly sorry, sir/madam, but our services are restricted to those who possess airship passes.

> When you pick the "Seek Passage to the Gold Saucer" option:

Lionnellais: A ticket is required for passage to the Manderville Gold Saucer. If you do not have one, I'm afraid I must ask you to be on your way.

> Nothing. (Nothing happens.)

Hida: Welcome to the airship landing.

Leaning against the wall at the top of the Carline Canopy's basement stairs leading to the Airship landing:

Adalhard: You know who Mother Miounne is, brother/sister? You'd do well to take her advice to heart.

Adalhard: There's some as say she's overbearing, but without her, we adventurers wouldn't be able to get by here in the Black Shroud. I myself owe her much and more.

Sitting on the couch waiting seats at the Airship landing:

Pfarahr: Memama never listens to me! I've told her countless times not to venture outside without her parents' permission, yet she never bothers to ask them.

Memama: Pfarahr always treats me like a child. It fair drives me up the wall!
